Questions – everyone’s got ‘em!
Leave us a comment below and we’ll do our best to answer them.
Q: HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE TO JOIN?
Our skaters must be at least 18 years old and have health insurance. However, we always need volunteers and help at our games, events and with our charity work. Young people who help us out can earn community service hours for their effort.
Q: DO YOU CHARGE DUES?
Currently, we do not charge dues. There’s a one time $50 fee to join. As a member owned organization, we ask that all league members help out – there’s plenty to be done and at least one or two small jobs for everyone.
Q: I’M INTERESTED IN JOINING. HOW DO I GET STARTED?
We ask all potential league members to come watch a few practices and see what we do. Our skaters will answer questions, talk about the rules and equipment and generally explain what it takes to be a member of CRD.
Q: I DON’T KNOW HOW TO SKATE BUT I WANT TO PLAY. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
We will teach you the ins and outs of derby skating. It’s a good idea to visit a roller rink which rents skates and spend a few hours on wheels. Every little bit helps.
Q: I DON’T HAVE ANY EQUIPMENT. WHAT DO I NEED TO BUY?
The required gear consists of:
- ROLLER SKATES
- ELBOW PADS
- KNEE PADS (USUALLY WITH GASKETS)
- WRIST GUARDS
- MOUTH GUARD
- HELMET
We have a small pool of loaner pads/skates in the league, and it might be possible to borrow some gear to get to feel for things. A new skater can expect to spend between $200 – $250 to get set up. Rookies tend to be hard on skates and the floor at the Ag Center is notoriously rough. It’s not a bad idea to start with cheaper “starter” skates and then invest in better skates once your skills improve and you have a better sense of what you want. You’ll also have a chance to talk with other skaters at great length about their preferences in pads, wheels, skates, bearings, deodorant, fishnets, etc.
