Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members, skating counter-clockwise around a track. Games consist of four 15 minute periods. Each period is a series of 90 second matches called a “Jam,” in which both teams designate a Jammer (the skater with a star on their helmet) who scores points by passing members of the opposing team. Each opposing team member passed by a team’s Lead Jammer counts as a point. If a team’s Jammer becomes the Lead Jammer by breaking through the pack first, the opposing team’s Pivot (the skater with a stripe on their helmet) has the ability to become their team’s Active Jammer and score points. The team’s Blockers (the “Pack”) attempt to assist their own Jammer through the pack while hindering the opposing Jammer’s progress.
